Here is an original and well played with deck of English playing cards. Forty-nine cards present with the 4 of spades, 4 of hearth, and 10 of clubs missing. Worn corners and soiled from use, but good color remains throughout.
English Parliament settled on the Ace of Spades as being the "duty card", initially this duty was stamped by hand on the Ace of Spades at the tax office, with such aces known as the "garter ace".
The Garter Ace in this set shows “Stopforth” as the printer. That name was on card sets produced by them from 1800 to 1824, when they changed their company name to “Stopforth & Son.”
A great set of cards for display that can be representative of many time periods. [jet] [ph:L]
