This wooden fife is a wonderful example of a typical musical wind instrument as used during the Civil War period.
In very good original condition, this fife measures 17” long and is made mahogany. Each end has a 2” long German silver ferrule mounted. Both ferrules have fine rings stamped into them. A single blow hole and six evenly spaced finger holes of varying size are in a straight line. Approximately midway between the blow hole and the finger holes the maker’s names are stamped, “GEO. CLOOSE / GC / CROSBY”.
Instrument is in excellent condition with no cracks or splits. The surface is smooth and free of blemishes. Musical wind instrument is a fine representative of a Civil War-era fife. [jet][ph:L]
