This piccolo is an example of a musical wind instrument as used during the Civil War-era.

This piece measures approximately 11.5” long and is made of mahogany and ivory. One end is stoppered with a removeable German silver cap and ferrule. The lower end features a half-inch German silver ferrule. A single blow hole and six evenly spaced finger holes are in a straight line. The last, and seventh, finger hole is positioned upon a raised circular platform. This “extra” hole allows for the “pinky finger” to change key.

This two-piece piccolo is turned and about midway there is a swell and raised German silver band at the point where the two pieces are joined. No maker’s marks.

Instrument is in fair condition with only one open crack. This runs the length of the mouthpiece, through the blow hole. The surface is smooth with only light scuffing.

The original case has a leatherette exterior with velvet lined interior is well worn with a split hinge.

This cased musical wind instrument is a fine representative piece of the mid-19th century.  [jet] [ph:L]
