FEDERAL ISSUE CIVIL WAR TIN CUP

$325.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 286-1387

One of the most useful items in a Civil War soldier’s possession was the issued tin cup.  Sturdy and constructed of tin, the seams were soldered and the handle attached by heavy wiring at the top and a rivet at the bottom. It could serve as a drinking cup, a boiler, a tool, and a makeshift plate or bowl during times of haste.

This example measures 4.25” in diameter, and 4” in total height.  A gray patina has formed with age and typical minor spot rust can be seen in localized areas of the handle, interior bottom, and in small patches on the outside body. The exterior bottom of the cup features a few light scratches from resting on an abrasive surface.  No undue corrosion is noted and some of the surfaces retain areas of brightness.

This is an honest but nice example of a Federally-issued tin cup.  No collection of common soldier items from the Civil War would be fully complete without such a piece as this.  [cm][ph:L]
