Excellent condition small ladle measures 6 ½” in length. Etched with initials, “WMB”. “S LEWIS” mark on reverse of handle.

This ladle was used to serve Hot Toddy (Hot water, whiskey, lemon, honey and spices) into A drinking cup. Typical elongated fiddle handle with a shallow bowl.

Samuel Lewis, born in 1818, was apprenticed to Samuel Kirk of Baltimore and then set up his own shop in Washington, DC. He first appears in the D.C. directories in 1843 as a Gold and Silversmith, Watchmaker and Jeweler, and is listed through 1867.  [ld] [ph:L]
