Outstanding condition tongs produced in Baltimore by Canfield Bro. & Co. Measure 8 ¼” in length. Marked on the inside, “CANFIELD BRO. & CO.”
Canfield & Brothers was formed in 1835 by Ira, William and Jared Canfield in Baltimore. In 1848, the company became Canfield Brothers & Co., which continued in the silver business until 1881 when it was acquired by another company. During the Civil War, the Canfield firm often converted coinage to other items, such as spoons, cups and pitchers. [ld][ph:L]
