Silas Lamson began making scythe blade in the 1830s and joined with Abel F. and Ebenezer Goodnow to from the Lamson-Goodnow Company in 1837, which became the Lamson Goodnow Manufacturing Company in 1853. The firm produced cutlery, kitchen knives, etc., and are known for their Civil War bowie knives and these combination mess sets as well, which were popular purchases by and gifts to departing soldiers. This is one of several types of combination mess gear marketed during the war that promised some convenience in carrying- space saving, not having to fish around looking for separate eating utensils, and no poking holes through haversacks, for instance. Besides, who would not want the most recent forward-looking gadget? These were similar to simple folding pocket knives with wood slabs on the handle, but came in two halves that would lock together when carried and simply slide apart for use.
This is in very good condition, with smooth metal showing just some shallow pitting on the bolsters and nice, dark wood. The soldier who owned it marked it by carving his initials “HC” on one side and “D.60.” on the other, presumably his company letter and regimental number. This limits candidates to soldiers from Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and the U.S.C.T. Some diligent cross referencing in rosters might narrow down the list, but since inter-company transfers are not always recorded a firm identification might remain problematical. It is nevertheless a nice bit of personalization that would make this a great addition to a display of soldier’s personal and camp gear. [sr] [ph:L]
