This is one half of a Civil War period combination knife, fork, and spoon set in pocket knife form.
The spoon and fork were fixed to one half and the knife in the other half. The two halves were held together by pins and could be separated so as to hold the knife in one hand and the fork (or spoon) in the other. The fork has three tines and the plated spoon stem is hall marked.
The missing knife half had a blade that was usually marked “UNION / KNIFE CO.” These “Union” utensil sets were a commonly used item, sold by camp sutlers to countless soldiers.
Only half a set, but still a most interesting personal item. [jet][ph:L]
