A handsome Victorian-era cased fish serving set comprising a serving knife (slice) and matching fork, with cream-colored bone handles secured by silver-tone ferrules. The knife blade is elaborately hand-engraved with a floral and foliate motif and features an openwork (pierced) scroll pattern along the reverse edge, a hallmark of fine Victorian presentation flatware. The fork bowl is similarly decorated with matching engraved scrollwork and a small pierced floral vent.

The shanks bear a run of five stamped marks (shield, oval, quatrefoil, and two rectangular initial punches) in the manner of English hallmarks. On close inspection these do not correspond to genuine Goldsmiths'-regulated assay marks (no leopard's head, anchor, crown, or lion passant present) and are best understood as pseudo-hallmarks — decorative maker's punches widely used by Victorian Sheffield silver-plate manufacturers to evoke the look of assayed silver. Accordingly this set is cataloged as quality silver plate rather than sterling.

The set is retained in its original fitted case: dark pebbled-grain exterior with gilt tooled border, brass hook-and-eye closure, and interior lined in deep blue velvet (utensil well) and pale blue/green quilted satin (lid). The case retains its original dealer inventory tag (#1266-996), previously described as a "cased wedding cake set" and priced at $125.00 — this appears to be a prior mislabeling, as the form and decoration are unmistakably that of a fish server set rather than cake service.

Silver plate retains good detail to the engraving and piercing with light overall wear and moderate tarnish consistent with age; no obvious losses to the pierced work. Bone handles are sound with a visible natural age line/hairline to one handle (cosmetic, stable, not a break). Case shows expected age wear: rubbing and small losses to the exterior covering along the edges and lid, with the hinge and closure intact and functional. Interior linings bright with minor soiling.
