A large conical tin coffee pot of the type used in camp and field during the mid-19th century. The body tapers from a wide base to a narrower shoulder and is fitted with a domed, hinged lid with a turned finial knob. A short pouring spout projects from the upper body opposite a substantial riveted strap handle, and a separate wire loop bail handle is mounted at the top for suspension over an open fire. A flat tab/foot is riveted near the base.
Construction is seamed sheet tin (toleware), finished in the original black japanning, now well worn to a dark patina with scattered oxidation and edge wear consistent with age and use. There is a vertical seam separation/crack visible along one side of the body (see photos); the piece has not been tested for liquid-tightness and should be considered decorative/display only in its present state.
Measures approximately 12" in height.
Attribution to the Civil War period is based on form and construction; no maker's mark is present. Pots of this general conical type were common camp/field wares of the mid-19th century and are frequently associated with Civil War military and civilian use.
Condition: As noted above — seam separation, oxidation, and general wear. Please see photos for full condition detail. [ss][ph:L]
