Showing that our love for gadgets and convenience is no new thing, is this patented collapsible drinking cup. This used a design that had been employed for pewter or silver collapsible cups, and was made of hard rubber, using Goodyear’s 1851 patent, but improved on both by using a base that kept the tapering, concentric, sliding bands of the cup body together when collapsed and adding a form-fitted lid that created its own carrying case when not in use, eliminating the need for a separate box or container. This is nicely marked on the top in raised letters, “NILES DRINKING CUP- PATENTED JUNE 5TH 1860.” These were meant to be comforts and conveniences for travelers, but also found their way into soldiers’ haversacks courtesy of well-meaning relatives or family, probably eliciting more comment than envy.
