This piece measures approximately 2.5” tall x 2.6” across its widest point. Crudely cast copper or brass, this has a nice dark green patina.

The “manilla” became a hot commodity used for trading in goods, especially for slaves of West Africa. The price of slaves in exchange for manillas varied greatly depending on the season, location, and type of manilla being offered. Manillas were the first all-purpose type of currency known in West Africa. This trade was carried on extensively by the Portuguese, British, French, and Dutch, all of whom had labor-intensive plantations in the West Indies, followed later by the Americans.  [jet][ph:L]
