This wood “box” is believed to be for a shaving kit, but could have had other uses. Completely handmade, it measures approximately 7” x 4.5” x 2”; where an extra 1.5” can be added for the pull-tab extending from the lid.
The lower, “box” portion is of a single 2” thick piece of wood with three compartments carved out. We believe the longest compartment was for a razor, a smaller one for soap brush, and one small bowl-shaped for soap. The two long edges on top are beveled to allow the lid to slide in.
The lid portion features tapered edges and a general shape that tells it was finished with a draw-knife.
An overall smooth surface denotes wear from years of use. The brown tone and rich patina match throughout with scuffing and scratching expected from age and use. A forged iron tack is seen in the bottom, reinforcing a split in the wood that occurred along a natural grain line in the block of wood.
Interesting old piece. [jet][ph:L]
