RW Toby shaving mug, signed E & W Bennett / Canton Avenue / Baltimore Md. This stamp was only used between 1856-1859 when William Bennett left the company. As with most of the small Bennett stamps (they also used a larger one) it is almost illegible. This is because the impression was not deep, and the glaze easily filled in the letters.

This mug is double glazed. A clear glaze was applied over the yellow clay and when dry, a second, dark brown glaze was splashed over it. All Bennett pieces are slightly different, the glaze did not run or adhere the same, giving each piece unique shading. There is a small spot without brown glaze near the bottom on the front, from the potter’s thumb preventing the brown glaze from reaching that spot.

Bennett Toby shaving mugs were very popular in the 1860s and many survive. However, finding one that is signed makes this a rare piece.

Measures 4 1/8” tall and 4” in diameter; perfect condition.  [lj] [ph:L]
