This beautiful sampler is typical of what young girls would have done in the 1800’s as a way to display the sewing skills that they were learning. Colors used for the stitching are blue, green, gold, tan and black. There are various images and a decorative alphabet border at the top. Flowers in urns, birds in trees, a man shooting at a deer and a ship are some of the images displayed. The young lady who created this put the year, “1825” near the top center of the sampler, making it even more unique. There are several sets of initials, “SMC” in the center, then “MW”, “CW”, “MPW”, “MNW” and “HW” on the sides.

Frame measures 15 ¼” by 15 ½”. Sampler measures approximately 12” x 12”. Muslin has yellowed with age but is very clean. No stains are visible. Slight fraying is present at the edges, mostly at the lower left corner. Sampler shows a few very tiny scattered holes. Wood frame is stained brown. Overall, sampler is in wonderful shape considering its age, and displays well.  [sl] [ph:L]

NOTE: The frame does contain glass. See our policy for shipment of framed items.
