Tobacco production and consumption was a significant part of early America and well into the 20th century. Snuff, a form of powdered tobacco often fortified with additional spices, was a popular form of tobacco consumption in the 18th and 19th centuries. The box pictured here is a reflection of that popularity. Ornate (as well as plain) boxes were developed to house the popular commodity. This box is made of burr birch with a lacquer finish and ornate, hand painted design on the lid. The box measures 3 1/8” long, 1 ¾” wide and 5/8” deep. The lid is hinged and measures 2 ¾” x 1 3/8”. The hinge is snug, and lid does open freely. The sides of box are rounded. Very nicely made item and retains original construction. [MC] [PH:L]
