Tobacco flannels, also called felts, were textile premiums that tobacco manufacturers inserted in their products in the early 1900s to advertise their brands and attract customers. They were made of cotton flannel and produced in many designs and sizes. Popular themes included college and university banners and world flags. It was popular for women to use them to make various sewing crafts, especially quilts. The inclusion of tobacco flannels ended around 1916 when redeemable coupons replaced them.
Offered here is a collection of 29 national flags from around the world. Various sizes, but most in this group are approximately 8.5” x 5.25”, with a few being 10.5” x 8.5”.
Flags included:
USA, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Chile, Columbia, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, England, France, Greece, Guatemala, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Paraguay, Russia (x2), Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Venezuela, and Uruguay. [jet] [ph:L]
