"Star of Henry" is a famous historic brand of chewing plug tobacco manufactured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by B. F. Gravely & Sons, a prominent tobacco manufacturer based out of Leatherwood, Virginia. The text stenciled on the box, "STAR OF HENRY BRIGHT POUNDS LEATHERWOOD, VA," relates to the specific proprietary brand name of the plug tobacco. The name relates to Henry County, Virginia, where the factory was located. “Bright Pounds” refers to the type of tobacco leaf used—Brightleaf tobacco (or Virginia gold flue-cured tobacco)—and indicates that the box was measured in pounds.

Leatherwood, in Henry County where the Gravely family operated their world-renowned plantation factories. Along the lower edge is stenciled “Regis’d Dec. 12, 1876” which denotes the original trademark or brand registration date. The Gravely tobacco dynasty in Leatherwood began as early as 1792. Benjamin Gravely famously pioneered the process of adding honey and licorice to sweeten plug tobacco. This unique treatment made their chewing tobacco flavor internationally celebrated throughout the 1800s.

Box has a sliding lid and measures 13’ x 5” x 4”. Stenciled on both sides and on one end. All wood and stenciling remains in very good condition. A nice antique tobacco box.   [jet][ph:L]
