A nicely hand-carved figural pipe bowl formed as the bust of a Zouave soldier. The carving shows good detail throughout: crisply cut, windswept hair and whiskers, the collar of the distinctive Zouave jacket, and the long, finely striated tassel of the fez falling down the back of the head and wrapping toward the shank. The wood has a deep reddish-brown color with a pleasing, even patina from age and handling.

The short shank is finished with a metal ferrule. The stem is no longer present, so the piece is offered as the bowl only. It displays very well on its own as a small carving.

The Zouaves, with their colorful North African-inspired uniforms of short jackets, baggy trousers and fez, captured the public imagination in the mid-19th century, and their dashing image appeared on everything from prints to personal items like this one. A fine example of soldier-themed tobacciana and a nice companion to other Zouave-related items.

Measures approximately 3 1/2 inches in overall length.

Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and handling. Stem lacking. Toning to the ferrule. Please see photos for details.   [cm] [ph:L]
