Offered is a finely hand-carved figural pipe, the bowl formed as the bust of a Zouave soldier. The carver has given real attention to the details: deeply cut, flowing hair and whiskers, the collar of the distinctive Zouave jacket, and the long tassel of the fez sweeping down the back of the head to the shank. The wood has a rich, warm brown color with an even, handled patina that shows the character of age without detracting from the carving.
The shank is fitted with a silver-colored ferrule, which in turn joins a gracefully curved horn stem with a faceted upper section that narrows to a smooth, tapered mouthpiece. The horn shows attractive natural translucence and tone.
The Zouaves, with their colorful North African-inspired uniforms of short jackets, baggy trousers and fez, captured the public imagination in the mid-19th century, and their dashing image appeared on everything from prints to personal items like this one. This pipe would make a handsome addition to any collection of soldier-related personal items or military-themed tobacciana.
Measures approximately 7 1/4 inches in overall length.
Condition is good overall, with wear and light surface rubbing consistent with age and handling. Toning to the silver fixture. Please see photos for details. [cm] [ph:L]
