This is a well-modeled figural clay pipe bowl in the form of a Zouave soldier's head. The bowl opens through the crown of his red-orange fez. He has a full blond moustache and beard, blue eyes, rosy cheeks and carefully detailed brows. A red collar and blue jacket frame his neck at the base. The tapered shank curves back and ends in a flared socket for a reed or wooden stem.
The underside of the shank is impressed in script "A. O. Jes. gesch." This is the German registered-design mark Ges. gesch. (gesetzlich geschützt, "legally protected"), with the capital G written in a script form that resembles a J. It identifies the pipe as German-made, most likely between about 1880 and 1910, when German factories turned out painted figural pipes in large numbers for export.
The Zouave look, with its fez, short jacket and baggy trousers, began with French colonial regiments in North Africa. It caught the public imagination on both sides of the Atlantic, and during the Civil War dozens of Union and Confederate units adopted Zouave dress.
Good overall condition, with the painted details well preserved. There is some minor paint loss and rubbing to the blue collar, light surface grime and scattered spotting consistent with age, and fine surface lines to the fez. Some residue is visible inside the shank. There are no chips or breaks to the bowl rim or shank end. [cm] [ph:L]
