This is a well-carved figural pipe of a bearded Zouave soldier, a kind of soldier's pipe that was popular during the Civil War era. The bowl is carved as the head and shoulders of a Zouave in his characteristic cap, which sweeps back over his head and ends in a folded tail at the rear of the bowl. The face is carved with real skill. He has a strong aquiline nose, a furrowed brow, and deep-set eyes. His full mustache and flowing beard are cut in fine, layered strokes that give the piece depth and movement. The carver smoothed the cap to a polished finish, and it contrasts nicely with the textured beard and hair.

The bowl is fitted to a long, natural cherrywood stem that keeps its original bark texture. A thin dark band sits at the shank joint. Near the end of the stem is a horn ferrule, and the bent horn mouthpiece is shaped with a flared bit. The Zouave's colorful dress and dash made him one of the most romanticized figures of the war on both sides. Pipes carved in his image were treasured by soldiers and civilians alike, and this one is a strong, displayable example of the type.

Condition: The pipe was clearly smoked and enjoyed. The bowl has a heavy carbon cake, and the rim shows charring and wear from use. The carved surfaces have a warm, even patina. There are minor surface nicks and handling wear consistent with age, but no major losses are visible to the carving. The stem is sound, with expected wear to the bark surface. The horn mouthpiece shows age toning.

Dimensions: Approximately 12" overall length. The carved bowl is approximately 3" long.   [cm] [ph:L]
