This 1863 standing portrait photo of President Lincoln was originally taken by famed photographer Matthew Brady. It is mounted to an interesting white card with black single photo border and the period label “War Department photograph Copy”. The photo is mounted horizontally along the top edge and is unmounted along the others. The War Department, along with other departments, retained Presidential photos for office use and display similar to today’s practices. The photo remains in excellent condition with very mild fading and nearly imperceptible scratch near Lincoln’s face.
The mounting card shows some corner loss at top right and left, and some inconspicuous layer loss along the top, right, and left edges. The reverse is a natural, unfinished brown color with penciled notations reading “M. BRADY PHOTO 1863 U.S. Copy of War Dept. photo” and “118-783”. Edge and corner wear similar to the front is noted – but neither detract from the presentation of the piece. Overall measurements are 5.3” x 9”.
A neat, wartime period US Government labeled photograph of the iconic President Lincoln. [cm][ph:L]
