A very pleasing, framed, outdoor image by American marine photographer Nathaniel Stebbins (1847-1922.) Born in Pennsylvania, he settled in the Boston area, was a member of various yacht clubs, and published several books using his marine photographs. Historic New England gives this image a date of Aug. 4, 1892. We are not sure, the vessel name cannot be uncommon, but think this might be the wooden-hulled screw steam yacht built at East Providence, RI, and initially named Red Cross. That vessel was owned by banker George R. Sheldon, and later by Irving T. Bush and by Gordon Dexter, all prominent businessmen. In 1917 the ship was taken into the US Navy for patrol duty on the coast, but in March 1918 struck a rock and foundered. Raised and refitted, the vessel continued to serve until decommissioned in 1919 and sold in 1920 to an E.N. Goodsell of Plattsburgh, NY.
This is a very pleasing image, in excellent condition, with good clarity and pleasing tones, showing the vessel in its more carefree, civilian days. A yacht ensign flies at the stern. Several crewmen or passengers are visible on deck. In the background are a couple of more lowly sailing vessels, and several mansions of the Newport elite. The frame is 13” x 11” and the photo itself is 8 ½” x 6 ½”. [sr] [ph:L]
