Large-format mounted silver photograph of the early American colonial period in the Philippines, depicting a multiple judicial hanging on a purpose-built timber scaffold in an open prison yard. The two-story gallows carries a row of condemned men in white standing beneath the cross-beam, nooses rigged overhead, flanked by uniformed guards and officials; sandbag counterweights hang from the drop mechanism. Behind rises a long two-tiered cellblock consistent with the Old Bilibid Prison complex in Manila, with a crowd of spectators and a guard detail gathered at left. The negative is numbered "No. 40" in the lower left corner.

INSCRIPTIONS

Laid down on a dark grey card mount bearing two gold-embossed inscriptions. Lower right, in gilt script: the studio credit "Pasay Art Studio, Manila, P.I." Lower center, in gilt block letters (partly rubbed): "EXECUTION OF FAUSTO MAUIVIS AND JUAN AGANON, FOR THE MURDER OF ESTEBAN VEROBA, LIEUT. OF POLICE AT PURA, DEC. 1ST 18[--]." Names and spellings are given as embossed and reflect period transliteration; Pura is a municipality in Tarlac province, Luzon.

DATING & ATTRIBUTION

The setting, dress, and "Philippine Islands" usage are consistent with the early Constabulary era, circa 1901–1906, when the Philippine Constabulary was suppressing rural brigandage and such executions were carried out at Old Bilibid. The studio credit and stock-series number ("No. 40") indicate a commercial Manila studio issuing documentary views of the period.

CONDITION

Print of even tone with scattered light surface soiling and foxing specks; mount showing edge and corner wear with rubbing to the gilt lettering as noted. Generally sound.

MEASUREMENTS

Mount approximately 6 x 9½ in.; image approximately 4½ x 6½ in.   [ss][ph:L]
