Signed Portrait of Brevet Brig. Gen. Abram O. Miller – 72nd Indiana Mounted Infantry, Wilder's "Lightning Brigade" – Inscribed "Your Comrade"
This is a printed bust-length portrait of Abram O. Miller, colonel of the 72nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry and later commander of Wilder's famous "Lightning Brigade." He is shown in his later years with a full white beard, wearing a double-breasted officer's frock coat with two rows of eagle buttons. The image is set in an oval vignette on a cream leaf. Below it, Miller has inscribed and signed in ink "Your Comrade / Genl A. O. Miller." The "Comrade" sign-off was common among Union veterans and reflects the fraternal language of the Grand Army of the Republic and regimental reunions.
Miller was an Ohio-born physician practicing in Lebanon, Indiana, when the war began. He served first with the 10th Indiana and became colonel of the 72nd Indiana in 1862. The regiment was mounted and joined Col. John T. Wilder's brigade, which became known as the Lightning Brigade for its speed and its Spencer repeating rifles. The brigade fought at Hoover's Gap and Chickamauga. Miller later took command of the brigade and led it during Wilson's Raid through Alabama and Georgia in 1865. He was wounded at Selma and was brevetted brigadier general for his service.
The leaf appears to have been removed from a bound volume. A strip of toning and paper remnant runs along the binding edge on the reverse. Portraits like this were often published in regimental histories and veterans' books, and signed examples are far less common than the plates alone.
Condition: Good. The portrait is clear and well printed. The ink signature has lightly oxidized to a soft brown but remains clear and legible. The leaf shows a toned strip along one long edge, with paper remnant and uneven tearing on the reverse where it was removed from binding. There is light overall toning and a few small scattered spots. The reverse is otherwise blank.
Dimensions: Approx. 6 1/4 in. wide x 9 1/4 in. high. [cm][ph:L]
