This photograph shows about forty-five infantry officers, NCOS, and privates arranged in three rows: standing, seated, and lounging on the ground. All but one wear Civil War style forage caps with low crowns and chinstraps, and four-button fatigue blouses, so it is likely not too many years after the war, but judging from the trapdoor rifles, occasional five button blouse, and crossed rifle infantry insignia, if nothing else, the image dates around 1875 or so. One fellow in the rear rank has donned a double-breasted full dress tunic and 1875-style infantry shako, making it likely they belong to a state organization.

The clarity and tones of the image are quite good and the men have adopted a variety of poses, or attitudes. The company drummer leans on his drum and sticks in the bottom row, and a fellow soldier holds his rifle with breechblock thrown open. One NCO at center stands in profile holding a rifle with bayonet fixed. Several smoke long-stemmed pipes. Three officers, certainly the company captain and two lieutenants are seated at center. Behind them an NCO rests his hand on the shoulder of what seems to be the company first sergeant. Stacked rifles are at left and right. One tent is directly behind them and others appear in the background, so the photograph is certainly taken at a military encampment of some sort.

The image itself measures about 10 by 13 3/8 inches. The mat is about 13 ½ by 16 ½ and the frame will add a couple more. The frame is not old, but has a nice brown color and narrow gilt inner edge. The cover is plexiglass, so it will ship economically and be less exposed to damage. The photo is in great condition and has a lot going on it.  [SR]
