Very nice seated view of an officer posed by a table with his sword cradled in his lap. The subject wears a dark frock coat with 1^st Lieutenant shoulder straps and light trousers with a thin dark leg stripe. The frock coat is open to reveal a matching dark vest with military buttons. The officer also wears his sword belt with shoulder support strap and rectangular eagle belt plate. A close look reveals a sash under the belt.  Cradled in his lap is his Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword with a metal scabbard. Resting on the table next to him is a dark slouch hat complete with hat cord, infantry horn insignia with the number “88” at center and a 1^st Corps badge on the side.

Image is clear and has excellent contrast. Paper is clean but does have a few scattered spots of oxidation.

Image is housed in the original oval wooden frame with a gold interior border. The frame meas. approx. 11.00 x 13.00 inches with red, white and blue matting. There is a small piece of glass missing from the top of the frame. Frame edges show light wear.

The reverse of the frame is missing the original backing which has been poorly replace by modern brown paper held in place by tape. Some restoration is needed.

The 88^th Pennsylvania was organized in September of 1861. They served in the Army of the Potomac from October of 1861 to March of 1862 when they were shifted to the defenses of Washington and the Department of the Rappahannock. In June of 1862 they joined the 3^rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and in September of that same year joined the 1^st Corps where they remained until that organization’s consolidation with the 5^th Corps in early 1864.

The 88^th saw action in 42 engagements to include 2^nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and Five Forks. The regiment suffered 181 deaths by battle, wounds and disease plus many others wounded but survived.  [ad] [ph:L]
