The image measures 5-1/4” by 7-1/4” and is mounted on a card 9-3/4” by 11-1/2” The image is very good, sepia toned, with good detail and contrast, showing just some white spotting at upper left and at lower right edge, all well away from the figure. The subject is seated, with trimmed hair and neat chin beard, turned slightly to the left, with right arm resting on the back of his chair displaying a book upright in his lap, spine toward the camera, but with the title indistinct.

He wears a single-breasted frock coat with convex rimmed buttons on the front, and three smaller buttons visible on the bottom of his cuff at left. His coat is dark and piped around the collar in a lighter color, seemingly with a dark facing, and with a five-point metallic star clearly shown on the right (and certainly present on the left as well,) the Confederate rank insignia of a Major. His trousers are somewhat lighter and have a dark, wide stripe down the outside. There is no identification. The dark facing of the collar suggests the possibility of a Surgeon, a guess that might be supported by the fact he is unarmed.  [sr][ph:L]
