The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic, with extant local chapters/camps that preserve the legacy and memory of United States Veterans of the Civil War. The SUV was effectively born in Pittsburgh, when a proposal was made in 1877 to formally organize an organization for the sons of GAR members.
This photo features the Fife and Drum Corps of the Phoenixville Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans. Young members in SUV uniforms stand and sit around their conductor/leader (center) with instruments, including a painted bass drum which identifies the group. The image itself is in excellent condition and is mounted to a large, light gray card. The card shows a light stain along the left edge (but is otherwise clean) and small sections of the upper left and right corners are missing. Slight edge wear is noted at the lower left corner. Three very small mounting holes are present along the top edge. The reverse is a natural off-white color with darkening along all edges. Two vertical lines of foxing are noted near the center as shown. A photographer stamp reads “M. G. HALLMAN, Phoenixville, Pa.” Several characteristics (gear, uniforms, and instruments) give us clues as to when the photo was taken – likely the very early 1900’s or very late 1890’s. Overall card measurements are 11” x 14” with the photo measuring 11.1” x 7.2”.
The borough of Phoenixville is located northwest of Philadelphia and was known as the home of the Phoenix Iron Works, a major producer of ordnance during the Civil War at over 50 rolled iron rifled artillery tubes per week.
A very interesting image of the ongoing efforts of the youth of the day to honor and remember some of our best and bravest. [cm][ph:L]
