This period photograph shows the famous Lincoln House in Springfield, decorated in mourning and funeral appointments shortly after President Lincoln’s assassination.
It is mounted to a white card, which shows some light surface dirt and staining. Though the condition is good, there is light wear noted at each corner in the form of very mild denting and rolling. The image itself is in good condition.
The reverse is the same color and blank. There is some light, scattered foxing and an older penciled notation reading “Photo of The Lincoln Home at Springfield Ill – Taken while draped in Mourning during his funeral. Property of Don C. Clarke 433 N. Randolph St. Macomb, Ill.” Corner wear similar to that on the front is noted. Overall measurements are 9.5” x 7.6”. It appears to be a photo by Samuel Montague Fassett of Chicago, Illinois – taken in late April of 1865.
A truly scarce snapshot from a tragic American moment - copies of which are not often found beyond historical society archives. [cm] [ph:L]
