This grouping of 3 antique photos includes one of GAR members standing in front a post, presumably in Falmouth. An older, typed tag on the 2nd photo of GAR members posing in front of a building identifies a man in the back row of the photo as “SAMUEL TUNER (Charlotte’s Grandfather)”. The final photo is mounted to a card, framed and shows the officers and sailors of the USS Agawam, with a typed note and penciled arrow identifying Sam.
In 1861, Sam enlisted as a private and mustered into Company E of the 12th New Hampshire. He transferred out on 4/30/1864 to the Navy as a Seaman and served aboard the USS Agawam until being discharged for disability on 6/12/1865 at Norfolk. He was an active member of GAR Post 206 in Falmouth until his death in 1915.
- The smallest photo measures 7.25” x 9.25” and shows some fading. The frame is silver finished and of a tabletop style with an open edge and sliding backing (folding stand is missing).
- The photo labeled “Memorial Day in Falmouth” is mounted to a card and housed in an antique, black frame. It is backed by thin wood and covered with paper, but missing the hanging wire. Measures 13.1” x 11.1”.
- The naval photo is printed on a heavy card, which shows some edge wear, layer separation, light fading, and a vertical crack through the center. The frame is wood with a heavy paper board backing and measures 11” x 13”.
Three identified GAR photos in one grouping, traced to a land and sea veteran of some of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. Ideal pieces for the collector of veteran items and would compliment any display or archive. [cm][ph:L]
