This is a large oval albumen photograph measuring 7” x 9” mounted on a 10” x 12” oval mount.
The image features a ribbon on top with “Co. H. / ORLEANS CADETS / 18TH LA.” Under that, filling most of the oval are small portraits of nine members of the regiment, military icons, and stars containing battle honors. Those honors include: Pittsburg Landing, Farmington, Shiloh, Corinth, Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Mansura, Norwood, Texana, Bethal, Bisland, and Fordoroh. The bottom of the image has, “Entered Confederate States Service / June 19th [?] 1861, 85 Rank & File. / Paroled June 6th 1865, 18 Rank & File.”
Image is light and faded, otherwise the image is fine. The oval mount has gold printed rules surrounding the photo. Impressed into the mount at the bottom is, “T. LILIENTHAL / PHOTOGRAPHER / NEW ORLEANS”. Mount has some edge damage on the left side and some light brown foxing around the edge from being in a wood frame. Nothing is on the reverse.
The Orleans Guards Infantry Battalion was a six-company pre-war militia unit that entered Confederate service in 1861. The men were from New Orleans and P.G.T. Beauregard was a member at one time. His name was called at each taking of the roll, and the answer was given was "Absent, on special assignment." It was attached to Colonel P. Pond's Brigade, Army of the Mississippi, and reported 17 killed, 55 wounded, and 18 missing in the Battle of Shiloh. Later the unit was mustered out of service, but most of the men transferred to other Louisiana commands to finish out the war. [jet][ph:L]
