Crisp and clear Brady image of a small house and big tree. A fresh grave is next to the tree. Image print is mounted on double-ruled mount. Photo measures 4.5” x 3.2” on 6” x 4.5 mount. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1862, by Gardner & Gibson..." in fine print along the bottom edge.
A printed paper label is pasted on the back with "BRADY'S ALBUM GALLERY. / No. 480. / FRAME HOUSE ON FAIR OAKS BATTLEFIELD, / Used as Hospital by Hooker’s Division." With a three line "infringing on copyright" warning below.
"Brady's Album Gallery" refers to a famous series of Civil War photographs, primarily by Mathew Brady and his associates (like Alexander Gardner), published as collectible, card-sized prints (cartes de visite) in the 1860s, documenting battlefields (Antietam, Yorktown), camp life, and key figures like Lincoln and Grant, bringing the harsh reality of the war to the public. These iconic images, featuring portraits of generals and stark aftermaths of battles, formed albums displayed in parlors, becoming a vital record of the conflict. [jet][ph:L]
