This photo features surviving members of the 1st NY Dragoons and was taken at the Annual Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic – held in Buffalo in 1897. The veterans are wearing regimentally marked mourning ribbons and four females flank the former commander, Colonel Alfred Gibbs, on either side of the front row. In the center of the second row stands a man closely matching an available photograph of Lt. William Winegar, a Medal of Honor Recipient for valor at Five Forks on April 1, 1865. The photo is mounted to a beige card with water staining along top, right, and lower edges and body of the card (the photo itself is in fine condition with no notable wear). The photo is mounted in a modern frame, which measures 12.4” x 15.4”. The photo measures 7.4” x 9.6”, while the card measures 11” x 14”.
Originally mustered into service as the 130th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, it was converted to cavalry on July 28, 1863, and designated as the 19th Regiment New York Volunteer Cavalry. The men were recruited from Allegany, Livingston, and Wyoming counties. The 19th Cavalry was officially re-designated as the 1st Regiment of Dragoons on September 10, 1863. The term dragoon generally refers to mounted infantry or light cavalry.
Originally assigned to the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac, the Dragoons were transferred to the Army of the Shenandoah under the command of General Sheridan.
During its service, the 1st New York Dragoons fought in 64 battles, captured 19 pieces of artillery, and four Confederate battle flags. After marching in the Grand Review at Washington D.C. at the close of the Civil War, the Dragoons were mustered out of service at Cloud’s Mills, Virginia, on June 30, 1865.
A very interesting photograph – one of the only images of the survivors of the regiment. Ideal for the collector of Veteran items or New York in the Civil War memorabilia. [CM] [ph:L]
