This well-known photograph of General JEB Stuart should be recognizable to most students of the Civil War and was likely part of a series of photos taken in 1862 or 1863, when he was around age 30.
The image shows a bit of light fading but the gloss finish of the original egg emulsion is intact. A very small spot of surface debris is noted at low right. The image is bordered by an oval frame with geometric patterns and an outer border of floral and geometric designs. The case is pressboard, covered by thin, brown leather with a floral relief. The front half of the case is missing, but the closure hooks remain. Dimensions are 3.65” x 4.6”.
An endlessly displayable period albumen photo of one of the Civil War’s most famous personalities. [cm][ph:L]
