This famous photograph features the hot shot furnace, water battery, and east wall of the oldest fort in the United States – Castillo De San Marcos - or “Fort Marion.” The image is creased along the bottom, which partially obscures the period ink label below. The mounting paper shows discoloration along the edges but uncompromised by acid. The lower 1/3 of the mounting paper is missing, with the initial tear removing the first portion of the ink labeling. Without unfolding, the remaining paper measures 8” x 13.5”, with the photo itself measuring 6.75” x 8.9”.
The reverse features 3 pasted newspaper columns listing the retirements of artillerymen in service. The columns are annotated with updated dates of retirement or death in period ink, with the latest had dating reading “1892”. The column clippings are dated 1886 and 1887.
A quite rare original copy of a famous and endlessly recognizable photograph. [cm][ph:L]
