Wilmon Blackmar is deserving of his own biographical sketch: after having served in the 15th PA Cavalry, he climbed the ranks to the point of being discharged to accept a First Lieutenant’s commission in Company H of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry. Already known for his bravery by 1865, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bold and aggressive actions at Five Forks. After the war, he became the Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, a graduate of Harvard Law School, and a celebrity veteran advocate.
This image features the former officer in a carriage, driving a team of 2 Ostriches. The passenger gives a subtle smile to the camera and Wilmon focuses on the animals. A deep gray mounting card hosts the image, and features no descriptive text. The image is in excellent condition, while the card shows very mild chipping along the bottom edge. No damage or wear noted otherwise. Dimensions are 8” x 10”.
An uncommon view of a celebrity Civil War veteran – the perfect piece for the collector of fine or distinctive military photographs. [cm][ph:L]
