A fine original albumen print from Alexander Gardner's celebrated "Incidents of the War" series. The image documents the winter encampment of a detachment of the 50th New York Volunteer Engineers, one of the most important specialized units of the Union Army. A group of officers stands at ease before their headquarters, flanked by distinctive hut-style winter quarters constructed of timber framing and brush — a rare and intimate glimpse of engineer camp life during the war.
The 50th N.Y.V. Engineers were indispensable to the Army of the Potomac, constructing pontoon bridges, roads, and fortifications throughout the Virginia campaigns. Their skilled labor made possible the river crossings at Fredericksburg and countless other critical operations.
The negative was made by Timothy H. O'Sullivan with the positive printed by Alexander Gardner. Both credits fully legible beneath the ornate "Incidents of the War" title lettering.
Presented in a carved mahogany-finish wood frame with double mat and UV-protective plexiglass.
Condition: Very Good. Uniform age toning; image sharp and well-defined.
Frame Dimensions: 18" x 16.5" [ss] [ph:L]
