One of the most haunting images to emerge from the American Civil War, this is an original albumen print from Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War, published in 1865–1866. The photograph depicts a burial detail recovering the skeletal remains of Union soldiers killed at the Battle of Cold Harbor (June 1–3, 1864), one of the bloodiest engagements of Grant's Overland Campaign, where Union forces suffered catastrophic losses in a matter of minutes.
The negative was made by John Reekie and the positive printed by Alexander Gardner at his Washington studio, 511 7th Street. The image is lettered beneath with the full title, photographer credits, copyright notice, plate number, and date — all fully legible.
Presented in a handsome mahogany-finish wood frame with double mat, professionally framed and under glass. A museum-quality example of one of the most significant photographs in American history.
Plate: No. 94, April 1865
Frame Dimensions: 18.5" x 16.5"
Condition: Very Good. Strong contrast; toning consistent with age; well-preserved. [ss] [ph:L]
