A magnificent and historically important original albumen photograph documenting the winter headquarters of the Army of the Potomac at Brandy Station, Virginia, in February 1864 — one of the pivotal encampments of the Civil War, from which General Ulysses S. Grant would launch his Overland Campaign just months later.

The soldiers prominently featured in the foreground are Zouaves of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, one of the most visually distinctive and celebrated units in the Union Army, shown here in their full dress uniforms including turbans and the colorful, North African-inspired costume that made Zouave regiments instantly recognizable on and off the battlefield. The regiment served as provost guard at Army of the Potomac headquarters, making them a frequent subject of photographers at Brandy Station. Behind them, tall Virginia pines frame the headquarters compound with rows of tents and wooden platform walkways stretching into the distance.

This image is No. 60 from the landmark publication Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War, widely regarded as one of the most important photographic documents of the American Civil War. The photograph was made by Timothy H. O'Sullivan (American, about 1840–1882), with the positive printed by Alexander Gardner (American, born Scotland, 1821–1882). Examples of this image are held in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Harvard Art Museums, the National Gallery of Art, and the Library of Congress.

The mount bears the complete original printed imprint: "Negative by T.H. O'Sullivan / Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1866, by A. Gardner, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia / Positive by A. Gardner, 511 7th St., Washington / Head-Quarters Army of the Potomac, Brandy Station, Virginia / No. 60 / February, 1864." All text fully intact — the hallmark of an unaltered, untrimmed original example.

Presented in an archival double mat and housed in a handsome period-style burl walnut finish hardwood frame with UV-protective acrylic glazing.
