A Civil War–era albumen portrait photograph of a young Union enlisted soldier, housed in a period Victorian frame. The sitter is shown bust-length, wearing a regulation nine-button frock coat and a forage cap (kepi) bearing brass company and regimental insignia on the front — the numeral “51” with the letter “K” above it, identifying him with Company K, 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The eyes have been lightly hand-tinted by the original photographer, a common period touch-up. The print is set behind an oval gilt-lined mat.
The image is contained in a deep shadowbox-style frame of dark walnut or rosewood-grained wood, with a gilt cove liner and mother-of-pearl floral and foliate inlay at the corners. The reverse retains its original brown paper dust backing, twisted-wire hanger, and a typed paper identification label affixed to the back board reading “COMPANY K, 51st PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY,” corroborating the insignia on the cap.
Historical note: The 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was organized in 1861 and saw extensive service, most famously storming the bridge over Antietam Creek (Burnside’s Bridge) in September 1862. The regiment also fought at Fredericksburg, in the Vicksburg campaign, and through the Overland Campaign at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania.
Condition: Photograph displays age-typical fading and sepia toning; mat shows scattered foxing and amber water-staining to the lower portion. Frame with surface wear, minor losses to the inlay, and rubbing to the gilt liner. Paper backing aged and torn in places. Glass present. Sold as found, not examined out of frame.
Dimensions: Frame measures 12 × 14 in. [ss] [ph:L]
