A superb and evocative original albumen photograph from Alexander Gardner's landmark series Incidents of the War, depicting a mounted Union cavalryman with his horse in an open field setting — a striking image that captures the quiet dignity of the mounted soldier in wartime. The subject is identified as Captain Edward A. Flint, Company C, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, one of the most distinguished cavalry regiments in the Army of the Potomac.
The 1st Massachusetts Cavalry was organized at Camp Brigham in Readville, Massachusetts, beginning September 3, 1861, and served actively until July 24, 1865. Company C saw action at some of the war's most significant engagements, including the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. Captain Edward A. Flint commanded Company C, which served in the Provost Guard at Headquarters, Army of the Potomac. Flint is further documented in the historical record, appearing in a Library of Congress photograph alongside Captain Charles Francis Adams, Jr. and Lieutenant George H. Teague, officers of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry at Army of the Potomac headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864.
Adding exceptional personal provenance, a contemporary pencil inscription at the bottom of the mount reads "Master Flint with his favorite horse Bunny" — a rare and deeply humanizing touch that connects the viewer directly to the subject, giving both horse and rider their names and a relationship that transcends the formality of a military portrait. Such original period inscriptions are uncommon and significantly enhance both the historical and sentimental value of the piece.
The image beautifully showcases Gardner's mastery of outdoor field photography, with horse and rider rendered in exceptional tonal detail against a soft, luminous background of open terrain and distant treeline. The ornate calligraphic "Incidents of the War" title flourish appears prominently on the mount alongside the photographer's credit and publisher's Washington imprint — all fully intact, confirming this as an unaltered original example.
This photograph comes from the distinguished collection of Jimmy Stamatelos, a well-regarded Civil War photography collector, lending additional confidence to its authenticity and desirability among serious collectors.
