A remarkable and historically significant original albumen print from Alexander Gardner's celebrated "Incidents of the War" series, published by Philip & Solomons, Washington, D.C., 1865. The image captures Company D, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry — the personal escort of Major General George G. Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac.
Company D's role as Meade's headquarters escort placed them at the very center of Union command during some of the war's most critical operations, including the Overland Campaign and the siege of Petersburg. This image offers a direct visual connection to Army of the Potomac high command.
The negative was made by Timothy H. O'Sullivan with the positive printed by Alexander Gardner, 511 7th Street, Washington. Published by Philip & Solomons, Washington, D.C. All credits, title, and date fully legible.
Presented in a carved mahogany-finish wood frame with double mat and UV-protective plexiglass — museum-quality presentation befitting this exceptional image.
Date: September 1864
Frame Dimensions: 18" x 16¾"
