A Civil War–era composite albumen photograph titled "THE OFFICERS OF THE C.S. ARMY & NAVY," photographed and published by C.F. May, 519 8th Avenue, New York. The image is a montage of forty-nine individual numbered portraits of leading Confederate military and political figures, with a printed numbered key identifying each below the image. Notable subjects include No. 11 Jefferson Davis, No. 23 Robert E. Lee, No. 21 "Stonewall" Jackson, No. 1 P.G.T. Beauregard, No. 22 Joseph E. Johnston, No. 17 A.P. Hill, No. 4 Braxton Bragg, No. 5 John C. Breckinridge, No. 35 Leonidas Polk, No. 41 Kirby Smith, No. 42 Alexander H. Stephens, No. 46 Robert Toombs, and No. 39 Capt. Raphael Semmes "of the 290" (the CSS Alabama).
These montages were a popular Northern-published novelty during and just after the war, assembling carte-de-visite portraits into a single composite "group" image. Presented in a later black wood frame under glass, sight size approximately 11 x 15 inches. The print shows age-appropriate toning, fading, and light foxing consistent with period albumen photographs; the title and key remain fully legible. A displayable example of a recognizable wartime Confederate group portrait. [ss] [ph:L]
