Original albumen silver print, circa 1862, measuring 8¾ x 6¾ inches, presented in a handsome burl wood frame with double white mat, approximately 15 x 15 inches overall. Photographed by George N. Barnard and James F. Gibson and published by Mathew B. Brady as number 234 in his celebrated series Incidents of the War — copyrighted 1862 by Barnard & Gibson in the District of Columbia. The image documents Union soldiers examining the extensive Confederate earthworks and defensive fortifications constructed at Manassas following the Confederate victory at the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861. Several figures are seen at a log-and-brush barrier in the foreground, with substantial earthwork fortifications and the Confederate winter encampment visible in the background. Mounted examples of this print are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.

Numbered prints from the Brady Incidents of the War series in original albumen format are scarce on the market and seldom appear ready to hang.

Condition: Good overall for age. Spot mounted on backer board; some period toning and minor surface wear to print.  [ss] [ph:L]
