This image features the members of Pennsylvania Post Number 48 of Mansfield, posing with stacked muskets and flags. A folder mounted to the reverse holds two papers with partial identifications of the men.
The image is mounted to a card with gilt border framing and housed in a glass-fronted wooden frame. The backing has been secured with framing tape. The card shows a moderate amount of wear to include staining and cracking as shown (with one crack extending across the low right of the image) – but remains complete and very displayable. Dimensions are 9.9” x 12.8”
The post was organized on August 14, 1875, roughly ten years after the end of the Civil War and was named in honor of Union General Mansfield who was killed at Antietam. It began with a strong local contingent of veterans and grew to have around 221 names on its historical roster by the late 1890s. The post consisted of veterans from various regiments across Pennsylvania and New York, including many men who served in Co. B of the 101st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (known locally as the "Tioga Mountaineers").
A very nice Civil War image for the post-war collector. [cm] [ph:L]
