Original Albumen Silver Print, October 1862 Photographed by Alexander Gardner — Published by Philip & Solomons, Washington, D.C.

A remarkably significant original albumen photograph from the celebrated series Incidents of the War, one of the most important documentary photographic projects of the American Civil War era. Front and center in this compelling group portrait stands Allan Pinkerton, the legendary Scottish-American detective and founder of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, who served as chief of the Union Intelligence Service under General George B. McClellan. Flanking him are Union officers posed informally before a canvas shelter tent in a wooded encampment — a candid and intimate glimpse into the inner circle of the Army of the Potomac's intelligence operations.

Photographed by Alexander Gardner at Berlin, Virginia, October 1862, just weeks after the Battle of Antietam, this image carries the full original printed imprint: "Alex. Gardner, Photographer — Incidents of the War — Guides to the Army of the Potomac", with the copyright notice entered according to Act of Congress in 1862 by A. Gardner in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia. Published at 311 7th Street, Washington by Philip & Solomons.

Pinkerton's presence elevates this photograph from a fine Civil War document to a piece of genuine American historical importance. Operating under the alias "Major E.J. Allen" during the war, Pinkerton organized one of the earliest American espionage networks, making field images of him exceptionally rare and highly sought after by serious collectors.

The print displays the rich sepia tones and exquisite detail characteristic of high-quality albumen silver printing. The complete original title lettering, photographer credit, copyright notice, location, date, and publisher's imprint are fully intact on the mount — a hallmark of an untrimmed, unaltered original example.

Presented in an archival double mat of complementary neutral tones and housed in a handsome mahogany-finish hardwood frame with UV-protective acrylic glazing to preserve this irreplaceable primary document for generations.
