Image shows William H. Ramsdell of Company I. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and dark bowtie. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and Company.
Image has very good clarity and contrast. Mount has some minor edge wear. Paper is good with minor edge foxing.
Reverse has a photographer’s mark for CHAS H. LINDSEY…NASHUA, N. H. Period ink inscription at top reads “WM H. RAMSDELL CO. I”
William Humphrey Ramsdell was born in Milford, New Hampshire on July 25, 1830. He enlisted as a private in Company I, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 25, 1861. He was mustered out on June 21, 1864
After the war he returned to Milford and took up farming. In 1874 he married Miss Ella Turner, also of Milford. He died on June 16, 1879 and is buried in Milford’s Union Street Cemetery.
The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [ad] [ph:L]
