Circa 1870s cabinet card, vignette bust view of Confederate General Eppa Hunton II (1822-1908.) Hunton passed the VA bar in 1843, practiced law in Prince William County, and was the commonwealth’s attorney 1849-1861. He was a delegate to the Democratic convention in 1856 and an elector in 1860. He favored secession and having served as a Colonel and Brigadier General in the VA Militia, became Colonel of the 8th VA Infantry at the beginning of the war. He served at Bull Run, Balls Bluff, fought on the Peninsula at Frazier’s Farm and Gaines Mill, then at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and was wounded in Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. Promoted to Brigadier General in August 1863, he saw action in Pickett’s Division at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Sayler’s Creek and Five Forks, where he surrendered. He resumed his law practice after the war and entered politics, serving in the House from 1873 to 1881 and in the Senate from 1892-1895.

The card is backmarked by the photographer, G.W. Davis, with studios in Washington and Richmond. His logo uses a very Confederate Roman Cross of stars visible above the clouds in night sky. Hunton’s name appear in ink and pencil underneath.  [sr][ph:L]
